According to The Korea Herald, South Korea’s Ministry of Education announced that the Korean Education Center in Paraguay has been expanded and relocated to a new facility as interest in Korean-language education continues to rise in the country. According to the ministry, the relocation, completed in February, was aimed at meeting the increasing demand for Korean-language courses.

The ministry noted that interest in learning Korean has grown significantly since Paraguayan education authorities introduced Korean as an official second foreign language course in May 2024. The new facility includes six classrooms. The Korean Education Center in Paraguay was first established inside the South Korean Embassy in Asuncion in 1980 before moving to a separate building in 1993. South Korea currently operates 47 Korean education centers in 22 countries worldwide.

The opening ceremony for the new center was attended by the South Korean ambassador to Paraguay, officials from the Ministry of Education, Paraguay’s Vice Minister of Education and Science Hermenegildo Cohene, representatives of the teacher training university, school principals and members of the Korean community.

During the ceremony, former Paraguayan Vice Minister of Education and Science Maria Gloria Pereira received a plaque of appreciation for her contribution to the development of Korean-language education. In addition, a memorandum of understanding was signed with four members of the Korean community to support the renovation of libraries at schools offering Korean-language courses.

South Korean Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin said the center is expected to develop into a broader educational platform that will include language education, academic exchanges and cultural cooperation, reflecting Paraguay’s growing interest in Korea
