According to Smith College, college has been named by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as one of the top 25 institutions producing Gilman Scholars. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, offers scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students with significant financial need to study or complete internships abroad.

This recognition highlights the college’s strong dedication to making international education more accessible. Since March 2023, the Lewis Global Studies Center has played an important role in promoting awareness of the Gilman Program. During the past three years, more than 40% of Smith’s 108 applicants were chosen to receive scholarships.

Together, these students earned $171,000 to help cover personal costs related to studying abroad. Smith’s Gilman Scholars have taken part in programs in countries such as Ireland and Brazil, attended summer language courses in Kyrgyzstan and South Korea, and joined visiting student opportunities at the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford.
