Oxfordshire has become the UK’s first Artificial Intelligence Growth Zone, set to attract investment, create jobs, and boost innovation in the AI sector.

Oxfordshire named UK’s first AI growth zone

According to the BBC, the move is part of the UK government’s strategy to position the country as a global leader in technology. It comes after a major UK-US trade agreement in September, which allocated billions of pounds to AI development—funding that could significantly benefit Oxfordshire.

Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Peter Kyle said the new growth zones will create “unparalleled opportunities” for innovation and economic growth.

Qay Gadney, CEO of Oxfordshire-based Charisma AI, which develops AI avatars for employee training, called the designation a “long-awaited recognition” of the region’s potential. “It’s exciting to finally see this sector getting the attention it deserves,” he said.

The UK’s first AI Growth Zone will be based in Culham, home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The government says the area will act as a testbed for sustainable energy solutions that support the UK’s AI ambitions.

Gadney added that the new zone is expected to attract “new jobs, fresh investment, and innovative public services,” and strengthen the UK’s position as a leader in AI.

He also highlighted the sector’s rapid pace of development: “It’s almost astonishing how fast everything is moving in AI. We need to pause, think carefully, and make sure we are doing the right things.”

Looking ahead, he said the most exciting part is the ability to achieve what was previously impossible.
