According to Ohio Capital Journal, Wagner, a Delaware County resident, most recently served as superintendent of Johnston-Monroe Local Schools since 2022. Prior to that, he led the Licking Heights School District, bringing several years of district leadership experience to the state position.

Paul LaRue, the board’s president, called the incoming superintendent an “experienced leader.”

“We want to make sure Ohio is a national leader when it comes to our teaching workforce, and he will position us to advance the work focused on having excellent educators in our classrooms,” LaRue said in a statement.

Wagner holds degrees from Kent State University and is licensed as a school psychologist.

He will replace outgoing superintendent Paul Craft, who announced in January that he plans to step down from the post in July.

The state board oversees educator licensure, teacher evaluations, disciplinary conduct matters and district territory disputes. However, its responsibilities were reduced after an overhaul that created the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
