Council to raise home-to-school transport fee by £170

North Northamptonshire Council has decided to increase the annual fee for non-statutory home-to-school transport. The charge will rise from £795 to £965.

According to the BBC, the council, which is controlled by Reform UK, said the fee has remained largely unchanged over the past decade. However, relatively small increases in recent years have caused the gap between the cost of providing the service and the amount charged to grow to an unsustainable level.

Officials stated that the per-person fee still remains below the full cost of delivering the service, meaning it is heavily subsidised.

Chris McGiffen, the council’s executive member for highways and travel, said the situation had reached a point where it needed to be addressed. He acknowledged that some families may find the increase difficult and encouraged residents to visit the council’s website to see what support is available.

The council also noted that discounts are offered for siblings attending the same school and that a monthly payment option is available. The fee change will also apply to students moving into post-16 education from September.
