China’s Ministry of Education has urged all relevant authorities to make every possible effort to ensure the security of the country’s national college entrance examination, known as the gaokao.

According to a statement from the ministry, fairness must be upheld throughout the entire admissions process. Authorities emphasized the need to strictly prevent unfair advantages and ensure the equitable distribution of educational resources.

The role of the gaokao in selecting talent should also align with national strategic needs and technological development goals. Universities have been encouraged to optimize their academic program structures and promote the integrated development of education, research, and talent cultivation.

To implement a “secure gaokao”, the conference called for stringent supervision over the handling of exam materials, enhanced security for listening components in foreign language tests, and stronger measures to combat high-tech cheating. Ongoing reforms in the examination system were also highlighted as essential.

Structural optimization efforts should focus on improving admissions planning, adjusting academic disciplines, expanding undergraduate capacity, and strengthening links with the labor market to better match talent development with societal needs. At the same time, authorities stressed the importance of curbing utilitarian and short-term tendencies in the admissions process. Student-centered services are also set to be improved, covering areas such as public safety, transportation, accommodation, catering, healthcare, and epidemic prevention and control.

Held annually on June 7–8, the gaokao is regarded as one of the most important examinations for millions of Chinese students, as the results largely determine university admissions and can significantly shape their future career prospects.
