China - Azerbaijan joint engineering faculty inaugurated in Baku

The BUCT&BEU Engineering Faculty was inaugurated earlier this week, becoming the first Chinese undergraduate-level educational institution in Azerbaijan. The initiative is designed as a major platform for bilateral academic collaboration, offering a range of specialized programs including chemistry, polymer materials and engineering, biotechnology and bioengineering, computer science and technology, as well as mechanical engineering, process equipment and control engineering.

Students who successfully meet graduation requirements will receive dual bachelor’s degrees awarded by both universities, reflecting the joint nature of the program.

The faculty aims to cultivate highly qualified professionals with an international outlook while promoting cooperation in teaching, scientific research, and academic exchange. It is also expected to contribute to cultural and educational exchange between China and Azerbaijan.

Tan Tianwei, president of BUCT, noted that bilateral relations between the two countries have continued to strengthen, with growing people-to-people exchanges laying a solid foundation for deeper educational cooperation. He expressed hope that the partnership would expand into postgraduate education and joint research initiatives.

Meanwhile, Yagub Piriyev, president of BEU, described the new faculty as a clear example of innovative academic collaboration based on the shared vision of both countries’ leaders to enhance higher education ties. He also encouraged students interested in studying in China to learn the Chinese language and gain knowledge of its history to support future international cooperation.

Emin Amrullayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Education, expressed hope that the partnership between BUCT and BEU would further expand into scientific research and doctoral-level education, elevating collaboration to a new stage.

Founded in 1958, BUCT is one of China’s “Double First-Class” universities, known for its strong foundation in science and engineering alongside disciplines such as management, economics, law, literature, education, philosophy, and medicine. BEU, established in 2016, is a modern higher education institution created to strengthen engineering and technical education in Azerbaijan.
