Martin had worked at St Edward's School, Cheltenham since 2006 and was promoted to head of sixth form in 2024. However, discrepancies were discovered when he applied for the position of deputy head in 2025. He listed a different date of birth from a previous application, five years later than originally stated, and his explanations during the investigation were deemed unconvincing, BBC reported.
Further checks revealed that a certificate he submitted claiming he held a master’s degree in history from the University of Cambridge was fake. The university confirmed that the document was not genuine and that the course mentioned was not offered by the named college. In addition, his claim that he served as a magistrate once a month was not supported by records from HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
The Teaching Regulatory Authority panel concluded that Martin had engaged in dishonest conduct. In order to maintain public confidence in the profession, he has been prohibited from teaching.
He may apply for a review of the prohibition order after two years.
