The incident took place at Thorpe St Andrew School on Wednesday morning. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the BBC, when the school went into lockdown at around 10:25am, pupils were told to switch off their phones and take cover under their desks.

Norfolk Police said the boy was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a search of the area. He was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and remains in custody.

In an update issued at 5:49pm, police clarified that the suspect had initially been reported as 16 years old but was in fact 15.

Following the incident, Laundry Lane remained closed. Footage circulated on social media showed armed officers conducting searches inside the school.

Parents were informed by email in the evening that the school would reopen on Thursday. Headteacher Penni Bignell said she would respect the decision of any parents who wished to keep their children at home to support them.

Owen Jenkins, chief executive of the Broad Horizons Education Trust which runs the school, said: "This has clearly been a distressing experience for our entire community. Our focus now is on ensuring all students feel supported as we begin to understand what has happened."

Thorpe St Andrew, which has 1,834 pupils and includes a sixth form, is believed to be Norfolk's largest school. It received a "Good" rating in its most recent Ofsted inspection in 2025.
