A 17-year-old second-year Pre-University Course (PUC) science student in Bengaluru was found dead at her residence on Thursday afternoon, shortly after exam results were announced, police said.

According to Times of India, The student, identified as Tanushree, allegedly died by suicide after reportedly failing in three subjects, which investigators suspect may have caused distress. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, police added.

According to police, the incident came to light around 3:30 pm when she was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home. Her mother was away at work at the time. Officials said the student had spoken to friends earlier in the day about her results but later stopped responding to calls and messages.

A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Hebbal police station, and a preliminary investigation suggests it is a suicide. Further inquiry is underway.

The Pre-University Course (PUC) is a two-year higher secondary education system in Karnataka, India, equivalent to Class 11 and Class 12. It is divided into Science, Commerce, and Arts streams. The second-year examinations are considered important as they play a significant role in admissions to higher education institutions, which makes it one of the most difficult admission exam. Hundreds of thousands of students appear for these exams annually.
